The word "mater" is Latin, an etymological root word for mother. This piece is another from my ephemeral collection of beeswax mixed media pieces which I have been making since 1987. This piece contains a reproduction of an old erotic engraving of a robed man exposing himself hidden behind a balsa wood ladder and placed alongside a small glass vial of what was once milk.
Over time, the milk transformed into casein milk protein and water. In the detail above are examples of how the milk has changed over time. I have put together three shots, in detail, from left to right of the original vial of milk, then several years later and now what it looks like today. A lovely science experiment in a bottle! The caption on the bottom of the box, reads "Giver of life, Mater" and is obviously a reference to the sexual act, the nourishment of milk and mother and the alchemical union of the deities who bring us the celestial milk of spiritual nourishment.
This piece evokes these ancient memories and crystallizes this ancient source of wisdom and shakti for today's world.
You can see the shot on this page of a group of these mixed media wax shadow boxes and icons. They look good either one at a time or in a group like this.
if you're interested in purchasing a selection of these pieces. I'm happy to discuss it and make an arrangement suitable to your needs.
